Here at Luctonians Sports Club, we understand the importance of community and the incredible difference it can make when people come together.
Last season, our Charity Group proudly raised funds for Gilwern Ward at Hereford Hospital. The nomination came from our very own Norm, following the life-changing accident he suffered in December 2024.
In Norm’s own words:
“On the night of Storm Darragh, on 6th December 2024, I was involved in a car accident that resulted in me being taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for emergency surgery on a broken neck.
After 32 days, I was transferred back to Hereford Hospital, where I waited for a place to become available at the Specialist Spinal Unit in Gobowen. At that point, I had limited use of my left leg and no movement in either of my arms.
The care and support I received from the staff on Gilwern Ward during the 54 days I spent in Hereford was fantastic. The only thing that was missing was a designated spinal wheelchair. When you’ve spent 46 days forced to lie flat on your back, you want to know the correct equipment is available to help you begin the long journey back to being upright again.
The spinal wheelchair and porters’ chair have now been funded by the Charity Group at Luctonians Sports Club, where I was Chairman at the time of the accident.
A massive thank you to Kirstyn Downes-Hopkins and her Charity Committee at the club, who continue to raise money for local community projects like this.
Ultimately, I wanted this contribution to make life easier for the staff and physiotherapists on Gilwern Ward, who played such a huge part in my road to recovery.”
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our members, supporters, sponsors and volunteers, the Luctonians Charity Group was able to provide a specialist spinal wheelchair and a porters’ chair for Gilwern Ward—equipment that will benefit patients for years to come while also supporting the dedicated staff and physiotherapists who care for them every day.
This is exactly what our Charity Group is all about: investing back into our local community and making a lasting difference where it is needed most.
Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising throughout the season. Together, we’re continuing to change lives, one project at a time.
